Flat head Syndrome is a condition whereby the babies skull is flattened on one side. This may lead to a swelling elsewhere in the sckull, ear or eye misalighment and or restriction of neck rotation.
What causes it?
A newborn babies skull is very malleable and can therefore be moulded by external forces. If the baby lays with it's head in one position for prolonged periods of time this can start or accentuate the flattening. It can also be caused by the birth process, constraint in the womb, multiple births or torti collis (neck muscle spasm).
What can be done to help?
There is much that can be done to help reduce the effects if it is caught early enough. Here at the practice we have osteopaths with special interest in Paediatrics. We can not only treat the condition to reduce it's effects but we are able to advise you as a parent on what you can do to help.
